A New Chapter in Brooklyn Nightlife
New York City is about to welcome a new cultural hub in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, as a forward-thinking nightlife venue prepares to launch this September. Refuge is the project of longtime American dance music figure John Dimatteo, alongside acclaimed audio engineer Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu, both intent on bringing a world-class experience to the borough’s club scene.
Custom-Built Sound System: Meet “REX”
At the heart of Refuge lies its standout feature — a handcrafted, 10-foot-tall analogue sound system named “REX.” Designed and fine-tuned by Bernabeu himself, the system channels his decades of expertise. Bernabeu is well known for shaping some of the most iconic systems, including inspirations behind Floating Points’ Sunflower Soundsystem, as well as for venues such as Nowadays, Analog BKNY, and Stereo in Montreal.

A Sound That Transforms the Room
Bernabeu emphasizes that every system carries its own distinct character, and REX was built to combine warmth with impact. He describes the system’s sonic identity as immersive, effortless on the ears, and powerful enough to elevate the energy of the room. According to him, Refuge is designed to be more than a music venue — it’s a space where sound has the ability to shift moods and create transformative moments for the audience.
Housed in a Historic Williamsburg Setting
Refuge will occupy a 3,200-square-foot industrial building on Ten Eyck Street. The venue maintains the historical integrity of its 19th-century setting, complete with exposed brick walls and soaring 35-foot ceilings. With a capacity for up to 500 guests, the club offers both intimacy and scale within a setting that blends New York history with modern nightlife culture.
Acoustic Expertise Behind the Space
To optimize the venue’s acoustic environment, Refuge partnered with renowned sound consultant Al Fierstein of Acoustilog. Fierstein’s portfolio includes legendary New York nightlife institutions such as Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, ensuring the venue benefits from high-level precision in its sound design while respecting the building’s original architecture.
The Vision of Its Founders
For co-founder John Dimatteo, Refuge represents the consolidation of years spent running and attending events worldwide. His approach emphasizes authenticity, aiming to build a club that people choose to visit not just for a particular lineup but for the overall atmosphere. As he puts it, the club should feel like a destination in itself — a setting built from passion, experience, and community spirit.
A Place Built for Experiences, Not Photos
In a subtle move away from today’s phone-obsessed culture, Refuge will encourage guests to immerse themselves in the moment. While photography won’t be prohibited, the policy leans toward discouraging constant phone usage, inviting music lovers to experience the venue with full presence.
